Psalm 33

This week’s Song To Live By is Psalm 33

Iran, Russia.  China.

From our human vantage point the power of the nation states, with their military might and means of control can seem to be the defining force in our lives and the lives of those we love.  In times of global upheaval and conflict we need more than ever to sing songs that remind us who is really in control.

Psalm 33 is an anthem of happy hope for times of global anguish - now that’s a song we can live by.  There are verses and choruses we should make our own as we seek to walk faithfully with our God in seasons of worldwide worry.

There’s a verse celebrating that the plans of nation states ultimately come to nothing; but the plans of our God will always prevail.

There’s a verse that mocks the idea that military might can truly save, but that goes on to marvel in the ability of Yahweh to always get the victory he desires.

There’s a verse that points us to our true person and place of provision.  It’s the goodness and mercy of the Lord in times of famine, not any human maneuvering or management techniques.

And this is all such good news, because our God is such a good God.  He is right and He is true.  He is the Creator of everything, around long before any government was even conceived,  His word created the heavens and the earth.  He is an attentive God, he sees all things, and always watches over us his people.  And do you know what?  His love is unfailing.

This God is worth singing about, he’s worth composing music for; he should be celebrated.  This is a song to live by, because it calls us to put our hope in Him.

A Prayer

God, in times when so-called global super powers are flexing their muscles.  We look to you.  Our Creator.  Our redeemer.  Our Rescuer and our Sustainer.  Thank you that you are a good God, and your love for your people is unfailing and unending.  We will sing to you, we will make music for you, we will put our hope in you.
