Three books Andy’s found helpful recently:
The Air We Breathe, Glen Scrivener. This is a punchy and fairly quick overview of how ‘modern’ values like freedom, consent and equality actually sprang from Christianity, and make little sense without it. Drawing deeply from histor,y but with a keen understanding of how to converse with modern secular beliefs, this is an intelligent and encouraging read. Scrivener’s podcast / youtube channel, “Speak Life”, is also a very engaging and helpful look at current affairs through the lens of the scriptures.
The Patient Ferment of the Early Church, Alan Krieder. This is an in-depth look at how and why the church grew over it’s first 400 years in spite of ‘disincentives, harassment, and occasional persecution’. It presents a surprising answer - “patience”, and looks at how that was lived out. This is a more challenging read / listen but well worth the effort of engaging with.
How To Hear God - A simple guide for normal people, Pete Greig. This is a great primer on the different ways that God speaks to his people today - covering Jesus, the scriptures, the prophetic, and more. Pete is a great writer / teacher, and this is him at his best.
