Give Us Today Our Daily Bread
Learning to Trust God as Provider
When Jesus teaches us to pray, “Give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11), he is not simply offering poetic language - he is inviting us into a life of trust. Jesus himself lived this prayer. Throughout the Gospels we see that he relied completely on his Father’s provision. He was provided for with gold, frankincense and myrrh in infancy; guidance and protection from Herod; food from grainfields and banquets; the generosity of women who supported his ministry; and even a coin from the mouth of a fish to pay his tax. Again and again, God made a way—through prayer.
This confidence in the Father’s provision runs throughout Scripture. God provided seed-bearing plants for Adam and Eve, food for Noah, land and descendants for Abraham, flocks for Jacob, manna in the wilderness for Moses, victory for Joshua, wisdom and riches for Solomon, and daily bread for Elijah and Daniel. Provision is not just something God does - it is part of who He is. He reveals Himself as Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides.
Because of this, Jesus never worried about what he would eat or wear. He lived in unbroken trust. The question for us is: do we? Do we truly believe God is our provider - not just in theory, but in practice?
One of the clearest indicators of our trust is how we handle what God gives us. Jesus’ invitation to ask for daily bread is not just about money - it’s about dependence. When we hold tightly to what we have, we reveal hearts shaped by fear or self-reliance. But Scripture teaches us to honour God with firstfruits—to give back to Him before we spend on ourselves, as a declaration: Everything I have comes from You.
Generosity trains our hearts to trust. Whether we currently give little or much, we are invited to grow—step by step—into deeper confidence in God’s faithfulness.
So what might God be saying to you today?
Start asking Him for what you need - clearly and boldly.
Learn to receive what He provides - through work, rest, community, even unexpected blessing.
Re-examine your giving - does it reflect trust in God’s provision?
A day will come when you will need more than you can possibly provide for yourself. Jesus learned to trust His Father in prayer long before the cross—and because of that trust, He walked into death and out again in resurrection power. Let us also learn now, through prayer, Sabbath, and generosity, to trust the God who provides.
