"a simple gesture of biscuits..."

“In our small group we have been looking at The Art of Neighbouring material and thinking about how to love the people living literally next to and around us. It has inspired me to think intentionally about what I could do to show kindness to the people living either side of me.

I bought some of my favourite biscuits and planned to take a packet to the neighbours on my right and left. Several days passed and I still hadn't taken them round, finding myself busy or tired or just forgetting about it!

Eventually, nearly a week later, I took one packet to the family on one side and although I could hear they were in, there was no answer. Before I could get too discouraged I went to the other neighbour, an older lady who lives on her own, with whom I've had just a handful of short conversations over the last 7 years.

When she opened the door I said "I know this is random but I thought I'd bring you some yummy biscuits and just see how you're doing". She was really surprised and grateful because it turned out it was her birthday that day!! She wasn't seeing family until later in the week and was spending the day alone. We then chatted for over half an hour and she shared a lot about her life, her family and issues she has at the moment.

I could see the simple gesture of biscuits and doorstep conversation had a positive impact on my neighbour and I was so encouraged too! Where I thought I was delaying and not getting around to taking the biscuits to my neighbours, it turned out to be the perfect moment for that particular lady - on her birthday!

I felt God was in the timing and also in the conversation. Even though we hadn't specifically talked about God or faith, I felt that it was a moment of vulnerability and openness, where she was seen and heard, and had a random, unexpected birthday treat!

I was reminded and encouraged that in small acts of kindness (and obedience), God's love can have a powerful impact.”
